Bits and Bobs
Anagramarma
I have been trawling through a pen drive given to me last year from RSC and JISC, such has been the year that I have only got around to it today!! And stumbled across an application called Anagramarama - which being a free download is right up my street basically it gives you &letters and a clock ticking and you have to make as many words as possible from three letters all the way to the 7 letter anagram. The time ticks by and solves the entire puzzle. From an ICT point of view and pedagogoy, the program is self generating so that evan an ICT novice can use it, one drawback is that you don't appear to have any control over the anagram itself, so it would be limited to reinforce subject specific vocabulary, however from a primary point of view it can be used to discuss vocabulary and discuss the words that the program founfd that the pupils did not. Also you could use it as a starter excercise with adult learners especially those with english as another language.
Another of the applications I have rec ently been playing with is Dspeech. DSpeech is a text-to-speech program with the option of saving the output as a WAV or MP3 file, which is great for creating audio books from text sources. It also supports dynamically changing the features of the voices eg. insert pauses, emphasize specific words, spell them out etc. using tags. You can get a portable freeware version. Now this is where it can become really useful because in todays age of costs you do not have to either buy it or download it to the computer you are using, all you have to do is download it to a flash/pen drive and you can use it from there. Now the drawbacks, the voice is very mechanical and robotic in sound, however you do have the optuin I believe, but you would need to check it out - to record using your own voice. so why not use Audacity, well with this program you have the text written in the program, so providing the project is saved it is possible to go back and amend/ edit the text and build a new WAV file. this would especially be useful for special needs, for those dyslexics, or those who have speech problems, or even just those who have inner speech problems. Work used in a word processor can be copied and pasted into the program and the program can read it back to the pupil. The only thing is the caliber of the voice. However, I am sure there will be developments here.

Delicious
Delicious is a social bookmarking site (http://delicious.com/), it is free to register and keeps all your interesting websites under one bundle. what is more you can 'tag' them. This means that you can attach a tag or number of tags to the web address. What is the point of that, well you can catogorise your sites. from a teaching perspective this means you can share sites easily with students. Further because you can put a number of tags to the site it means you haven't got to share all your sites with all your students, but you can discriminate and share the appropriate sites to the appropriate people. My colleague Mandy has been using the site for a while now, and whilst you can set up a network and allow access to selected people - a bit like a wiki I suppose, the way she operates is that she encourages all her students to register the site - its free and it means they can start building a list of their subject websites. once registered you can view all the popular website, or just your own, you can also search tags. this means that if you get into tagging the sites, not only with a tag that will identify what the site is about but also with a tag specific to the course, e.g. its course id number then when searching the students can find the websites specific to their requirements.
It can take a little while to set up, especially if you have lists of websites, say in a word document, but when you are on the sites it is really easy and the tagging system is only a matter of a couple of extra clicks. You must be logged in to Delicous, however if not you will be prompted as you tag your site. I have added Delicious to my IE8 toolbar and if I come across a website that I think is of use, simply click the site and add the tag, the site is then added to your list!! So simple, no need to flick from site to site or copy we addressess and paste in on a different page.
The beauty of the site is that it is simple and easy to use, when operations are uncomplicated there are far more incentives to use them!!

eXe
eXe is another open source software designed for the Education market. It is a web based tool for designing integrated resources.
It can be downloaded and run locally or can be downloaded to a memory / flash drive and run directly from the stick. The advantage of that is that you do not need to have it installed on the machine you are using, and like Hot Potatoes published material is run through a web browser so that again it is readily portable and can be operated anywhere there is an Internet browser. The difference between Hot Potatoes and eXe is that all the resources are integrated. There is the opportunity to produce case studies, and selection of different formats of questions - fill the gaps and many more types of worksheets.

Glogster and Edu Glogster
Glogster is blogging with attitude, with glogster it is not just a matter of journaling with reflections and comments, it has the ability to add so much more - it is a sort of blogging poster. You can add text, images music and even video.When developed it was unique in its creativity, however now there is also Edu Glogster http://edu.glogster.com/ simply put glogsters for education. The beauty of this site is that it is run and controlled by the teacher, the teacher registers a virtual class and the students can express themselves using Web 2.0 technology. Once registered it appears to be an object based web page, with widgets that can be added to make the page more creative, it is all drag and drop or click select so really intuitive for both pupils and teachers alike. It enables creativity and is a basically an interactive poster.
As for teaching, it can be used for many things because of its creativity and interaction; however, anyone wishing to use a marketplace type activity, this is absolutely ideal for. Where the students are asked to research and feedback it allows for creativity and imagination, the widgets or placeholders linking into schooltube, or your own videos and allows both uploading and linking as it does with sound. Resources can be built using podcasts and videocasts.

Wordle
A friend has just let me know about Wordle - an interactive site that will make a word cloud out of blogs and text and it is such a fun visual context that I got to thinking how I could use it in teaching. I have just created a word cloud using Wordle for my blog to see what themes are currently arising. See below
As to how we can use it teaching, well it is a nice way of visualising reflections and ramblings, and for those of us using blogging as a way of asking students to reflect on their experiences, you can use wordle to augment those reflections. creating a word cloud periodically on your blog, will allow you to see if there are any changes in the way you are reflecting, if the major lines of thought are changing. As well as being a fun thing to do, it is quite quick - once you have made sure that Java is up and running and for most it probably is and there are simple embed codes which can just be copied and pasted into your blog.
From a cross curricular tool it can be used to highlight aspects of English, to motivate children into story telling, or to use to highlight Key words, the pupils can be asked to pick a key word from the word cloud and attempt to deine it. I am sure there are many more applications and as I experiment with it I will let you know.

Xerte
Xerte is an online tool designed to enhance e-learning, it has been developed by the University of Nottingham adn in September 2009 won ALT's ‘Learning Technologist of the Year Team Award 2009’. together with reviews by amongst others JISC, techdis service UK and The Association for Learning Technology, however the proof will be in its use and subsequent evaluation. Is it a tool that caters for all ICT capabilities or will it ultimately be used by those with an interest or ICT specialism.
It is billed as being 'is a fully-featured e-learning development environment for creating rich interactivity'(http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/index.htm accessed 25/01/10). The software is designed for the use by teachers and educators in the production of interactive enriched resources. There is a combination of both WYSIWYG interface and a small amount of scripting, however, where it becomes accessable to many non-ICT specialists is with the Xerte Online Toolkits. This has a series of templates which, with limited training are editable giving the ability to design resources to the users specifications. It is a server based tool, meaning that it can exist either on a network server or as a standalone tool, with a series of templates and add-ons which can be selected by the user by the click of a menu.
Also on the website is an area called Xpert is an area for the sharing and re-use of materials, which can be developed and commented on by RSS feed. The real beauty of this software is that it is open source and in this climate of decreasing and limited budgets is of benefit to most educators.
Xerte is an icon based development tool that allows object based learning tools to be created and has two areas of capability. If you do not code then you can use the software to insert text, graphics, animations, sounds and video. It is delivered as an .XML document and is compatable in SCORM format for Virtual learning environments. If you code a little, you can add to the template and make the interactive resources, developing your own resources and interactivity, if you code competantly you can create sophisticated resources. By this means it shlould cater for all levels of ICT capability, however the proof will be in its' use.
The installation of the of the application is not intuitive, however the supporting instructions are clear and very helpful. One problem I have encountered is that it is unclear where the finished file is saved, which could make subsequesnt use difficult. I will investigate further. Also I will attempt to produce a publishable resource that can then be uploaded to my moodle site.
my verdict is that it is a potentially very useful tool.....Watch this space.
